Official: Lions agree to sign 3-time Pro Bowl tight end Zach Ertz, AP source says…

The Detroit Lions have reached an agreement with three-time Pro Bowl tight end Zach Ertz, according to a source familiar with the decision, as reported by The Associated Press on Monday night.

The identity of the person providing the information is being kept confidential because the team has not officially announced the signing.

Zach Ertz, a pivotal figure in the Philadelphia Eagles’ Super Bowl victory over the New England Patriots six years ago, has an impressive record as a tight end. In 2018, he established a season record for tight ends with an outstanding 116 catches. Ertz, however, experienced a change of scenery when he was traded from the Eagles to the Arizona Cardinals during the 2021 season. Subsequently, he sought his release from the Cardinals earlier in the current season.

The Lions found themselves in need of additional depth at the tight end position following an injury to Brock Wright during Sunday’s victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. This setback occurred just a week after James Mitchell was placed on injured reserve. With only rookie Sam LaPorta and Anthony Firkser remaining in the tight end room, the Lions sought to bolster their ranks.

As the Lions gear up for the NFC Championship game against the San Francisco 49ers, the addition of Zach Ertz provides a seasoned and accomplished presence to their lineup.

Zach Ertz boasts an impressive career stat line, amassing 709 receptions for 7,434 yards and 46 touchdowns over his 11 seasons in the league. The Lions anticipate that Ertz’s wealth of experience and skill set will contribute significantly to their offensive capabilities as they continue their playoff journey.
